If there is one car segment in Canada that has gained traction in recent years, it is the development of the luxury truck. It has come to represent sophistication with a blend of practicality for the nation’s wealthier consumers. Its imposing yet refined features are sure to make heads turn yet give it the versatility to handle tasks that luxury sedans simply could not match.
The GMC Sierra Denali has been the leading truck in this category for several years, but the competition has steadily introduced similar models to challenge GMC’s luxury truck dominance. The company has had to rethink what the Denali brand would signify for the upcoming Sierra 2019 redesign to stay ahead of the competition and raise the bar for the segment. The best way for them to do this is by improving upon the previous year’s model that it will replace.
Although there are many similarities between the 2018 and 2019 models in terms of design philosophy, GMC has drilled down to the small details to make their changes. In reference to the front end, a new shape is being designed for the grille’s chrome surround similar to that of their HD lineup. It also has a wider inlet above the grille and the headlights are more angular. There is also a different position and shape for the tow hooks and the fog lights are set into the front bumper.
The sides of the 2019 Sierra Denali will have more sculpted lines to lessen the protuberance of the fenders and to add more depth to the doors. The rear will come equipped with a multi-stage tailgate to make access to the rear cargo area much easier. GMC will also introduce new rim designs but it will still retain the 20-inch and 22-inch wheel diameters from last year.
The interior dashboard will still remain largely the same as that from the last year but with a few key differences. The buttons and dials on the centre stack have been reconfigured and the infotainment system has been upgraded with better screens.
The instrument cluster now has an LCD display to show more information and give it a more modern touch. The cabin will still use the same materials such as dark leather, plastic, and wood trims to give it a classic yet understated look.
The new Denali will use the same engines from that of last year; a standard 5.3-litre V8 which produces 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, and a more powerful 6.2-litre V8 option which has 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
One big change however, is in the inclusion of a new 8-speed automatic transmission as standard while the 6.2-litre engines will now come with a 10-speed transmission instead of last year’s 8-speed. There are also plans to introduce a turbodiesel engine which is slated for the middle of next year. This would provide more drivetrain options to the current Denali over last year’s models.
The 2019 GMC Sierra Denali is set to become another success because of its improved design and enhanced performance and it proudly raises the bar of the Denali brand.
