In an effort to encourage safer driving, Ford has developed anti-collision technology that enhances driver awareness and mitigates or possibly prevents frontal collisions between pedestrians or other vehicles. This innovation supports driving tasks and lowers the stress of driving.
The Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection is designed to reduce or eliminate frontal collisions with pedestrians. This works by using radar and camera technology to scan ahead and detect any obstacle that may get in the way, whether it be a pedestrian or another vehicle. If it detects an oncoming object, a visual and auditory collision warning will alert the driver and the brake discs will automatically close the gap with the brake pad to increase responsiveness. If the driver is still unable to react to the impending collision, then the car will automatically brake to a full stop. Pre-Collision Assist may help drivers avoid rear-end collisions with other vehicles at all speeds, while Pedestrian Detection can help the driver avoid pedestrians at lower speeds – both are designed to prevent the vehicle from crashing or, at the very least, reduce the severity of collisions. The system was put through trials on a closed track using mannequins and engineers utilized the initial data to test their system on roads around the world in a myriad of conditions.
“This technology adds to the already impressive list of driver-assist technologies Ford customers benefit from today,” said Raj Nair, Ford Group Vice President for Global Product Development.
Other available Ford Driver-Assist Technologies include Lane-Keeping System, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with Cross-Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control and Collision Warning with Brake Support, and Active Park Assist.
Although this new system helps the driver avoid accidents, it still has limitations such as when driving in low or extreme light conditions, severe weather, and when vehicles are moving in the opposite direction.
